My Students

While students may hate having their picture taken, I always find them frantically flipping through the yearbook searching for their face in every page. I want my students to create not just a fun book of memories, but an artistic book of beautiful photos and designs that require professional tools.

Our school is considered a Title I high-need school because over 70 percent of our students qualify for free lunch.

Most of our students have nascent talents in a variety of visual and performing art forms including drawing, sculpting, photography, drama and spoken-word. Some of the more ambitious students among them participate in internships throughout the city at different museums, where they have developed a thirst for not only analyzing but creating art. I have a core group of students who have been taking yearbook with me for the past 3 years and I would like to offer them more sophisticated technology and tools in-house with which to create their graduation yearbook. They have dedicated innumerable hours over the years to creating yearbooks honoring past graduating classes, and they now deserve the chance to create a stunning yearbook for themselves.

My Project

With the new DSLR cameras, my students will be able to adjust the aperture and ISO of their photos so as to not over or underexpose their shots. This is especially important for photographing sporting events and performances that take place in the gym and auditorium where the lighting is harsh and often yellow. They will then be able to bring those photos back to the computer lab to manipulate, organize and design into a book using Adobe Indesign, rather than Word and Power Point, which were not build for such tasks. The effect will be multi-fold. First of all, the students will be creating a beautiful, humorous and creative book for the whole school to cherish. Moreover, learning how to create great photos and how to use Adobe Indesign will make my students more marketable in the competitive fields of the art world.

Photography and design opens people's eyes to new perspectives on the world.

Renowned American photographer Ansel Adams explained that "You don't take a photograph, you make it." Photography encourages its producers and creators to visualize the mundane in different ways and make it into something new. By donating to this project you will be providing students with the ability to develop marketable skills and to create wonderful gifts to share with their school community.
