My Students

My classroom is our school library, which has been my favorite place for as long as I can remember. My students are seniors taking library practice as an elective. What I would like create for them every day are the same feelings of safety and happiness that I've always experienced in the library.

Our school is located in an underprivileged neighborhood of primarily Hispanic and Asian immigrants.

Many of our students take the bus to attend our school from not-so-nearby housing projects. Although our demographic sounds almost cliche on paper, our students value education. One of the graduation requirements at our school is applying to college which makes the possibility of higher education a very real and attainable goal for our student body. The students involved in the school clubs we are putting this project together for are particularly proactive. They are creative and inventive coming up with interesting and original ideas for club activities that always go beyond just the clubs themselves with spillover effects for the entire school. Reading "Rapture Practice," a daring coming-of-age novel that strongly lends itself to tolerance, and having its author, Aaron Hartzler, visit us is one example of just how far-reaching, dynamic, and involved our students' thinking can be.

My Project

We are requesting copies of "Rapture Practice" for each one of the members of our Gay Straight Alliance Club (GSA) and our Card Catalogers Club (the library club), as well as a few extras for students who may not belong to either organization but would like to participate in the reading and the author's visit. Our plan is for all members of both clubs to read the book (preferably over winter break). We have spoken to the author about visiting us early in the new year. By reading the book ahead of time we can be informed of his story so we can better tap into what he will bring us with his presentation and talk--which if our ELA teacher/sponsor of the GSA Club's experience from hearing him speak at a bookstore appearance is anything to go by, promises to be a personal and touching one.

We, both the teachers and the students, believe reading "Rapture Practice," coupled with the personal visit from Mr. Hartzler, will further open our minds as well as increase our understanding, and in the process, our tolerance for humankind.

While we have a relatively tolerant student body in comparison to many other high schools, there is still a lot of work to be done in helping students understand and accept everyone. Our experience with "Rapture Practice" will help us toward that goal.
