My Students

I teach sixth grade in an area of Southern Los Angeles. I have the most amazing group of 6th graders this year. I believe in student centered learning, and I like to give them the opportunity to learn by doing, creating, and seeing, rather than just seeing or reading about them in a textbook.

My school is located in South Los Angeles.

The demographics are approximately 70% Latino, 30% African American, and 100% qualify for Title I funding. Our transiency rate is about 30%, so there are always students coming and going. Even with these obstacles, we believe our students have the ability to be just as successful as their peers in other areas. Because of this, our school is one of the highest performing schools in our area. My students come to school everyday and give me the best they can. Many of them have a lot of responsibilities outside of school like watching younger siblings, and helping run a household. Going to the library might not be something they can do, so I would like to provide them quality literature to read in class. The students all bring their own interests and strengths, some excel in math, others writing, etc. The one thing they all do enjoy is a good story.

My Project

I like to use Literature Circles in my classroom. Literature Circles give each student a role for a section of reading (summarizer, word wizard, discussion director, connector, illustrator, etc...). Students complete their role and then engage in a discussion with the members of their circle. This allows the students to develop a deeper meaning of a piece of text, and gives them the opportunity to have a discussion with their classmates using the academic vocabulary they have learned. The educational benefits are two-fold. Their reading comprehension is increased by having them analyze a piece of text fairly deeply, and they get a daily chance to engage in an academic discussion with their peers which bolsters their oral language abilities.

So far we have two class sets of books.

This unfortunately is not enough to last for the entire school year, which then forces us to use a basal reader. The basal does not give the students the exposure to quality literature. By receiving an additional class set of books, this gives the students another opportunity to read a book they might not have had access to. The Giver is a great read for 6th grade students, as the message communicated in the book is an important one.
