My Students

I am a special education teacher in a Title I, self-contained elementary school located in New York City. I have a Kindergarten class with students diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and other various learning disabilities. Students in my classroom have poor fine and gross motor skills and limited language. They are visual, kinesthetic learners and require hands-on materials and technology to aid them in learning to reach their goals.

We are a center-based learning classroom that provides students with exciting and interesting opportunities to practice, enrich, and enhance their learning all while encouraging independence and provide students with an abundance of opportunities to achieve success at their own level.

My Project

Center based instruction allows my students to take charge of their learning! Currently, during ELA and math lessons, my students are working in art, science, technology, math, reading and writing!

The materials requested will allow my students to be hands-on and engaged in their learning.

It will also allow me the opportunity to create materials that can be used over and over again. Velcro and magnets help me to create materials that can be used and moved all around the room. The kinetic sand, globe and telescope will be used for our upcoming science and social studies units allowing my students the opportunity to create, explore and learn the way they do best, hands-on! My students are constantly painting and creating various masterpieces related to our curriculum themes. This will give my students the opportunity to create colorful artwork, mess free (in their new aprons!).
