My Students

"Our classroom pet isn't just any old pet...We have a thousand WORMS!" That's what I'd like my kids to be able to say as they learn about composting.

We are a group of kids who live in two worlds: the one outside of school is often unpredictable and uncomfortable, sometimes downright scary.

So, we come to school and learn how to become a community and lean on each other while we learn to read and write and solve complicated math problems. As a teacher and parent, I've come to realize that our kids are not involved enough in their natural environments. One way I'd like to be able to improve that through the winter months is with vermi-composting. Students can read books about worms and how they break down food scraps, and then observe the life cycle of a red wiggler. They can watch the vegetable peelings become fertile soil so that in the spring, they can fertilize their very own plants!

My Project

Think about reading books about worms with a group of friends. Did you know that red wigglers emerge live from cocoons as about 28 tiny, clear worms as a part of their life cycle? Then, imagine carrying your food scraps back from the cafeteria to feed the worms your apple peels after lunch. Imagine the joy when kids use the fertile soil created by their class to fertilize plants with the worm castings. These experience will be made possible by this project. We will have the chance to read non-fiction books and watch the things the books tell us happen before our eyes! We will get inspired to write poetry and songs about our classroom pets. And, even the kids who are initially grossed out, will learn to appreciate the important job worms and other decomposers provide to our earth. What a great experience for kids to have!

Kids in the world today have access to a wide variety of technology.

They know how to fix gadgets that the adults can't. And, connecting with the Earth and the Earth's cycles is still critical to their development. Observing the job that worms can do within the setting of a classroom is a great step to gaining deeper understanding of the amount of trash we produce and what we can do about it as well as the scientific exploration of soil, decomposition, and life cycles.
