Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a bilingual Kindergarten teacher. My students are learning to read, write and count in English and in Spanish. Bilingual education makes sure that students are learning basic concepts in their own language as well as English. Many of our families speak Spanish at home and we really try to honor that culture.

I love my students!

Every year they come in eager to learn and ready to read. We have a lot of objectives to cover in 9 months but they work hard and are soon reading and writing independently. It is so amazing to see the growth the students make not only academically but socially each year.

My Project

Because our students enter Kindergarten with a whole spectrum of different abilities after we do whole group instruction with everyone, we work with small groups. I pull students who are working on the same skills to practice together. Students who are still working on letters and sounds can do activities specifically targeted toward that skill. Students who are already reading work on skills like fluency and comprehension. Tailoring the instruction to our students' specific needs.

We need activities for students to do in workstations!

During that time we have the other students play games together to practice what they have learned. The emergent readers will be used to have the students read to a partner or read to themselves. The dry erase boards and games will reinforce the reading and math skills we are learning. These kinds of activities make learning fun for our students.
