Help Mr. Dearybury

The minds of my students crave knowledge. They want to know everything they can, and I want to give it to them, but I need your help! I teach all subjects in a 2nd grade, inner city, Title I classroom in South Carolina.

On the first day of school, my students were so inquisitive about spelling. They were constantly asking me how to spell this word and that word...Since they were so eager, I threw my first day plans out the window and we got out the set of student dictionaries I had. The kids were ecstatic that we had a book with so many words they could use, yet every word they wanted was no where to be found. The wanted to know how to spell computer, Internet, video games, etc.; (We were writing about their hobbies.) yet the dictionaries were so old that none of the words were in the dictionaries. I taught them dictionary skills anyway, and we do use them, but many many times the old antiquated set of dictionaries I have are do not meet the needs of my students. The copyright on the current set is 1979. The pages are a bit yellow, and the books have served their time.

I immediately went to the computer to find a set of good student dictionaries. The momentum that the students brought to school on that first day let me know that dictionaries were a must! I was hoping that I could use the money that our district gives us for these kinds of things, to purchase a classroom set of up-to-date dictionaries; but much to my dismay, I found nothing in my price range. I did, however, find a perfect primary dictionary from Barnes and Noble. The books had thousands more words and very modern, up-to-date pictures. This project will not only benefit the students in my class this year, but the ones for years to come. These dictionaries will build vocabulary, increase the content and depth of their writings, and prepare them for future grades.

20 students in my classroom are hungry for learning. I am doing everything in my power to give them as much as I can. Will you help? Consider this project as one that will promote learning for years and years to come!
