My Students

My students come from hard working families and are part of a long tradition of learning since many of their parents and grandparents attended this very same high school. As the next generation in a modern world, they need materials and methods to help them improve their scientific argumentation skills, which is a big part of the new curriculum in the Next Generation Science Standards.

My students have big hearts and are willing to work hard for me in spite of my deplorable science jokes, because they know that I believe they can do it.

The skills they will learn with this project will give them confidence and take them into the future on a path toward success.

My Project

Who wants to argue about science? We do! These large portable whiteboards will allow us to have breakout argumentation sessions, where students will analyze the validity of each others scientific claims. Students work together to make presentations of their data and findings from classroom lab activities. Then they analyze other presentations to determine the scientific validity of their arguments.

Whiteboarding modeling strategies have been shown to be an effective tool for teaching the skill of scientific argumentation.

It is my belief that this will not only improve their science reasoning skills, but it will also deeply increase their understanding of the topics we are investigating.

These materials will be used not only in all of my high school science classes, but also by our student Sustainability Team, since I am the sustainability coordinator for our school. Our Sustainability Team is a group of volunteer students who are always looking for new ways to recycle materials and save energy at our school. These boards will save a lot of paper when making poster presentations; they will be used in our Earth Day celebration; and they will be shared with other classrooms in our science department where they will be used for many years to come.
