Help Ms. Morris

Everything in life has rhythm. When studied closely, reading, math, science, and social studies are all affected by the knowledge of rhythm and rhythmic patterns. As a teacher of elementary school music, I have found the more a student understands rhythm, the better their performance in their core subjects.

The school where I teach is located in a poor area of town. Most of our students receive free or reduced lunch. I have many students who are interested in learning about drumming, and while we have a few instruments, there is limited variety. The only ethnic instrument we currently have is an 18 inch rain stick. While attending a workshop in the recent past, it was brought to my attention that students from poor backgrounds have a harder struggle in school than those from a middle-class background. Engaging students in an extra-curricular activity, such as band, choir or orchestra, increases their chances of succeeding in school and graduating. Students who are involved in such activities are less likely to become gang members, use illegal drugs, or engage in criminal activity.

My goal is to establish a Drum Circle group for my fourth and fifth grade students. Our major need at the moment is a variety of multicultural instruments. One instrument in particular that we are in need of are djembe drums. I have purchased three djembe drums personally, but I cannot afford to supply all the instruments we need. We have between twenty and thirty students who are interested in joining this group and I would hate to turn any away, knowing the importance of music in their lives.

Your donation of djembe drums will help these students by instilling in them the confidence to try new things and how they can succeed if they try. Many of my students will fall prey to drugs, teenage pregnancy, and gang activity if they are not shown early how they are valuable and have a well-rounded education.
