Wii Need To Put Movement In Our Learning!

My students need a Wii system, controllers, UDraw studio and games to put movement in their learning and increase their creative side.

My Students

Have you ever tried to keep young children's attention when they have not had the opportunity to get up and move around? Our afternoons are like that when they have not gone outside for recess. Over half of our days are spent with inside recess due to rain, freezing temperatures, or high winds.

I teach in a high poverty, rural district where technology is not available in the homes of most of my students.

My school is about 75% free/reduced lunches. I have 20 students who love to learn! They are busy and need learning tools to help channel their energy. They love technology!!! The Wii will help in multiple ways. One way is to provide movement for those rainy, no out door recesses. Because our play ground becomes very muddy, my students don't get to go out for several days after it has rained. Because of their energy, the students have a hard time sitting and listening to instruction. The Wii will offer a structured form of activity during recess to help channel their energy. The Wii will also be used during center time, offering a variety of educational games. They will also use the Wii to build their creative side.

My Project

We will use the Wii in a variety of ways. The first is to help channel the students' energy on rainy days. Our playground stands in water and stays muddy for days, keeping the students indoor during recess. Wii offers a variety of physically interactive games and dance which will help get there wiggles out and keep them fit both physically and mentally. The second way is to get them up and moving during the day with educational games. The games provide practice with reading, phonics, math, problem solving, and social interaction. Over half of my students are kinesthetic learners and need to physically be a part of their learning. I also want to provide the drawing board so they can have a time for creative expression.
