My Students

Can you imagine the fun of 'Just Dance"ing with 23 of your classmates IN YOUR CLASSROOM? We gave it a try (using a borrowed unit) and it was a breathless, sweaty, fantastic event! I have never seen such focus! We would like to bring a Wii gaming system, with Fit Plus, into our second grade home.

My second graders come from diverse backgrounds and have a wide range of learning needs, including students with learning disabilities, English Learners, and students that are Gifted.

We are an urban school located in one of the largest school districts in the country. Although there has been a major decrease in funds for our school over the past few years, our school community has worked together to provide our students with a quality education and we are proud to be named a “California Distinguished School”. Yet, decreasing funds also means fewer resources for our students. With all that is going on, physical education is often, sadly, last on the list.

My Project

The Nintendo Wii is a gaming device, true. ALSO TRUE: it has tremendous potential in the classroom! With Wii Fit Plus, students can participate in an incredible variety of wholly physical activities that promote development of balance, coordination, and general fitness. Many of these activities, surprisingly, incorporate math and number sense, as well. Having the Wii console in the classroom will allow me to bring in some of my personal Wii active games as well, which further promote fitness through dance and a wide variety of sports. The children L-O-V-E it! It's a win-win! Also, the Wii console itself offers several "channels" that we could access in the classroom. The Weather Channel is quite interesting... one of its features is displaying weather on a virtual planet Earth. This could add another level of understanding to geographical settings in literature and lead to some interesting and inspired writing activities.

By helping us to acquire the Wii setup, you are bringing fresh opportunities to these second graders.

They will be experiencing movement in new and exciting ways in a structured and fun play environment. I firmly believe that the academic potential for Wii in the classroom is just being tapped into. Let us see where we can take it!
