I teach young children with multiple disabilities. They are a wonderful group who love to learn. It is a joy to provide them with unique and meaningful learning experiences. Most of our students have physical challenges as well as medical issues and cognitive impairment. Although their challenges are many, their enthusiasm and positive spirit empower us to develop their skills and increase their level of independence at school, home and in the community. We are proud of their accomplishments and want to find creative ways to help our students learn and develop as unique individuals. Our special children find it difficult to play with toys that young children typically use. Play is an important component of a child's life experience and we want our special youngsters to share the same joy and reap the same benefits from play as their peers in general education. We also want to teach our students utilizing toys and activities that are as typical to the norm as possible. We want our special students to fit in with their typical siblings and peers. In order to achieve this goal, our students need toys/activities that are easy to access as well as motivating and fun. The Nintendo Wii gaming system is a revolutionary gaming system that is for people of all ages and abilities. The "Wii" encourages everyone to play and participate regardless of skill level. The Wii encourages intergenerational play; grandparents can play with their grandchildren. It has graphics that are wonderful and visually stimulating and multi-sensory in nature. This gaming system and games will afford our children many great opportunities to learn and hours of enjoyment. They can develop social skills by sharing a game with each other. They can develop independent leisure skills. These games can be utilized in the classroom as well as by the therapists. They can learn to play with their siblings at home. I can see the smiles on the children's faces as they activate their new Wii gaming system. This is a very special gaming system that is perfect for our special youngsters. Please consider funding our proposal and give the gift of play and life-long leisure skill development to our children. May the light in their eyes and the smiles on their faces be your reward. We will share great pictures of our class and other classes in action utilizing their new Nintendo Wii. We will also share these wonderful resources with the three other classes of children with multiple disabilities. This proposal is so exciting to think about. I know our students will do a great job learning, socializing and developing skills and friendships with the "Wii." Thanks for considering our proposal and for thinking about becoming partners with us in the education of our special youngsters.
