This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My 1st graders will begin their learning adventure in the center of a large, urban district. Our school is a Title I school with approximately 850 students in grades PreK-5. The student body is a has a large percentage of English Learners. We have 75 percent minority students and over 90% percent Free and Reduced Price Lunch population. Within this challenge is strength and determination, as our school continues to close the achievement gap while growing confident and successful learners.

First Grade sets the foundation for a lifetime of inquiry and a love for learning.

These little scholars are at an age when everything is still new and exciting and their quest to know "how?" and "why?" makes each day a joy to experience. I strive to provide them with experiences that will not only ignite a passion to wonder and question, but will also give them the skills to find the answers they seek.

My Project

My students are active and eager learners. At 6 years old, it is difficult for them to sit still and stay focused. We have few seating options that allow for movement and all the children ask to use them, but it is not possible with 24 kids. We have a system for sharing the materials but feelings are hurt and my more active students, who need movement most are not able to get what they need.

We have talked often about choices that help us learn and my class has asked for more "wiggly seats" so they don't have to wait so long for a turn.

I see a definite difference in the focus level and concentration of those who are able to wiggle while they work. Having a set of wobble stools would allow my students more opportunities to choose this alternative.
