My Students

I teach a wonderful group of second graders. They enjoy working in collaborative groups and sharing their knowledge with each other. My students enjoy using their critical thinking skills to evaluate new information.

My students are 7-8 years old, and sitting still all day is difficult for them.

I want to change that by using flexible seating to incorporate movement into our daily routine and to promote a healthy lifestyle for my students. I want them to dive into the learning, and allowing them to move in their seat will help them maintain focus for the tasks at hand.

My Project

Kids know what they like & what they need. I asked each student to write down the top 3 things they would like to see in our classroom. Their answers are the source of this kid-inspired project.

The first thing my students asked for was additional Hokki stools.

Second graders are extremely energetic & very wiggly! They live by the mantra, Wiggling While I Work, & they felt having additional Hokki stools in our classroom would help them stay focused. Hokki stools provide a unique option for students who need to wiggle in order to stay fully engaged with the learning process. Hokki stools help kids move around in a quiet way. They allow students to be much more comfortable, while increasing blood flow to their brain through movement. This greatly enhances their attention spans & helps kids who are restless or fidgety. Having Hokki stools makes the goal of being active for at least 60 minutes a day attainable for kids because movement will be built into times when they would otherwise be sitting.

My students also asked for a class set of Henry and Mudge. They love this anthology story & want to read more about these characters' adventures. I'll set up a literacy station where students can read while using the stool. Being able to move will help them focus on the learning. We'll also discuss the differences in the types of food that Henry & Mudge eat and why those differences are important.

My students asked to grow vegetables during our science unit on plants. I've asked for 2 copies of the book Tops & Bottoms. This book talks about food like carrots, radishes, & more. It will help students identify different nutrient-dense food & will lead to discussions on how to create a balanced diet.
