My Students

I love coming to work every day because I love my students and I know that they have great potential to be whatever they want to be in life. I see children who are in crisis or labeled at risk. My students live with many personal and academic challenges. Many of my students receive special education services; they have learning disabilities and ADHD which makes schoolwork difficult. Although I assist them when they are in crisis, my most important job is teaching them strategies to deal with anger and emotions before it gets out of hand. I meet with small groups for peer mediation and life skills discussions. These intimate groups allow the children to open up and work through personal issues like homelessness, personal care and goals. No matter what their personal circumstance, I know that with assistance and the right tools, my students can go on to be successful in life. I'd appreciate any help that donors can give to help my students have a great educational experience.

My Project

The look and feel of school has changed for the better. Schools are now taking into consideration that the children should feel safe and comfortable in their classrooms. Grown ups have accepted the fact that children need to move....even while seated! Have you ever tried to sit still on a hard uncomfortable chair for a long period of time? Now imagine doing that at seven years-old! Children need to be able to move around without disturbing others.

These wobble stools are designed to enable kids to move around while sitting.

Scientists believe that constant movement relaxes the right side of the brain, leading to better focus. My students with special needs like attention deficit disorder (ADD) and Autism will benefit from having these stools available. The stools also encourage good posture as the kids balance themselves. This project also includes 2 beanbag chairs for children who prefer to sit close to the floor. Giving students a choice of seating makes students feel empowered and give them control of their learning environment which will hopefully lead to more engagement.
