Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are energetic, curious and eager three to five-year-olds. They are mostly Latino, and most qualify for free or reduced lunch. Many of my students are English Language Learners, and in school for the first time. Last year my classroom became a blended classroom, meaning I have a full-time Special Education teacher as a partner in the room, and almost a third of our students have Individual Education Plans, and thus are Diverse Learners. My students are at a disadvantage due to their lack of resources at home, language challenges, single-parent homes, limited education completed by parents, and experiences outside their community. I love these children and want to help them overcome these challenges.

My Project

I love Read-Alouds! My students do too, but they are only 3, 4, and 5 years old, and sitting and paying attention can be a challenge. Let's make it easier, and ensure all of our learners can be comfortable and have sensory objects that help them be calm and engaged. Help these Wiggle Worms stop squirming.

I chose flexible seating options that will all both my Diverse Learners and my General Education students, to choose how they will be most comfortable while at the rug for large group instruction.

When Children are comfortable, they can attend to the story or discussion we are having as a whole class. Giving them choices is also key to ensuring they feel empowered. I have seen this work in practice, but currently, don't have the materials to make this happen.

The secondary way I have assisted my students in being able to attend is providing them with something to hold and manipulate while listening to the lesson/story. Many of our students, especially the diverse learners need to busy their hands while listening. Sometimes this alleviates anxiety, and sometimes it just provides students with a lot of energy to expend some energy while still participating in the lesson.

Providing these materials will ensure all students have access to the lesson being taught.
