My Students

Aristotle once said..."The energy of the mind is the essence of life." In my classroom, the energy of the body affects the energy of the mind! I'd like to re-energize my students and allow them to stand while learning and working. I think this minor change will make some major differences!

My 4th grade students come from a variety of New York City families, and they love to learn!

They are full of energy and excitement, and sitting all day is not only destroying their bodies (as current research is proving) but also hurting their focus and attention. They need to wiggle! Our classroom is an active, vibrant learning environment where students are allowed to complete their work on pillows, stadium chairs, benches, lap desks...whatever works for them! But we are limited by our older furniture. I want to take my students into the next century by allowing them to stand while working- or sit if they get tired! The adjustable desks will allow my students to choose their learning position- a powerful opportunity for a 4th grader!

My Project

A 2015 study published in the Oxford Journal of Public Health shows that sit-to-stand desks in classrooms appear to be an effective way of reducing sedentary behavior (prolonged sitting) in a diverse sample of children. -Juststand.org At their 2013 annual meeting, the American Medical Association adopted policy recognizing potential risks of prolonged sitting and encouraging employers, employees and others to make available alternatives to sitting, such as sit-stand desks. -Juststand.org Such an easy change that will have lasting, positive effect on the students in my classroom.

Donating standing desks to my classroom is not just about donating furniture.

Donating these desks will contribute to the health and well being of my students, and will allow them to focus their energy on their work. Help me step into the research based 21st century with updated, creative ways to keep students engaged!
