My Students

Man, I love where I teach and the amazing students I get to work with each year. My school is a public school where students come from all over to attend. Students are chosen through a lottery process to make sure our classrooms are balanced with students representing all races, cultures and socioeconomic levels. We have students representing neighborhoods from around our school as well as the surrounding school districts.

Each year I am amazed at how energetic and creative my first graders are.

They are thinkers who have a love of learning and all they need is the right environment to thrive.

My Project

Each year I welcome a new bunch of energetic students and they are all unique in their own way. Yet one thing remains the same - they wiggle, wiggle and wiggle some more!

Research shows that flexible seating helps get students focused!

Flexible seating is when students have a variety of seating options in a classroom so that they can choose the learning spaces that work best for them. With first graders, focus is an issue simply because of their ages and attention spans. So this year, I've decided to leave my comfort zone, get rid of my chairs and to help my students focus better using flexible seating. The items I chose will provide my students with ways to find out what is best for them to focus. The 4 Runtz Ball chairs by Safco will allow my students to wiggle while I work with them at my small group table or during independent time. The Back Jack chairs, bean bags, KidKraft Poufs, bedrest pillows, and laptrays will help my students get comfy while reading and working around the classroom.

If this project is funded, my students will be more focused in the classroom so that they can master all of the important foundational skills they will need for the rest of their educational careers and lives.
