My first graders are enthusiastic, energetic, and so very curious about the world around them! They never cease to amaze me with their questions and continuous zest for learning.
The public school I work in is in a low income neighborhood in the rapidly changing Mission District of San Francisco, and we serve a linguistically and culturally diverse bunch of students and families.
Our school is committed to nurturing our students' social and academic needs, inspiring students to grow into independent thinkers, active citizens, and future leaders.
My Project
At any given staff meeting at my school you can always find teachers in an array of positions- seated at a table, criss-cross on the floor, standing against a wall, or propped up on a counter. We trust that each adult will be mindful enough to seek out the spot or position that will help them be comfortable, focused, and present.
What would happen if we provided our students with the same choice, and gave them the flexibility to determine what type of learning spot helped them feel the most present and focused?
The materials in this project are designed to do just that! Wobble stools, balance disks, tall stools, and camping chairs will provide a variety of seating options to help our learning environment meet the needs of our diverse learners. My goal is that by teaching students to make mindful choices and allowing them some autonomy in their environment we will increase engagement and overall focus and stamina for learning tasks.
