This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Can you sit still for hours? Well, neither can my students. Sitting still is overrated and asking students to sit still for hours on end is crazy. I would like to give my students the chance to "wiggle while they learn" in order to help them improve their academic performance in the classroom.

My six and seven-year-old first graders are high energy learners.

My students are all determined to learn and they all show a lot of enthusiasm in the classroom. My students are becoming experts in other areas aside from our everyday subjects such as robotics/coding, technology, chess, food to table gardening, and nutrition. Our school population is made up of English Language Learners who have come from many different countries. The school is located in a low-income area and we are a Title I school.

My Project

I want to explore the alternative seating concept in my classroom with my students. The wobble chairs and the balance balls will be used to help support this new concept. The students will be given the option to sit on these chairs at different stations in the room to help them with their need to be constantly moving in their seats. This will eliminate a lot of the classroom wandering, the urge of standing, hand drumming, pencil tapping, and the lack of concentration due to being uncomfortable. This will not only allow students to wiggle while they work, but it will teach them to make better choices of where they sit or who they sit by. Students will want to improve their behavior so that they will have the ability to "choose" their seat for the day. Once their behavior is improved their academics will advance.

Studies show that allowing students the choice and movement in their seating arrangements can improve behavior, attention spans, and academic performance.

The more freedom and choice the students have the more they can learn and grow in the classroom and in their future. The alternative seating can also make students become more actively engaged in the classroom without disrupting their learning.
