My Students

A typical day in my classroom is busy. There are kids reading, working collaboratively at their desks and working on chrome books while I meet with small groups. "The whole purpose of education is to turn mirrors into windows". ~Sydney J. Harris

I teach 4th grade at a small rural school.

We are part of a large diverse district and are often forgotten. Our population is about 320 students who come from a wide range of socio-economic backgrounds. Almost a third of our population is on the free and reduced meal program. My students are energetic and full of wonder. Think of yourself at your last meeting. How many times did you check your phone? Doodle? Shift in your seat? Now imagine a ten year old, used to running outside, being seated for 6 hours a day. Kids were not designed to sit for extended periods of time. They are programed to move.

My Project

Research shows that students using wobble chairs and standing desks do better in school. Wobble chairs provide an outlet for those involuntary wiggles yet allow the student to remain on task. I know I get higher quality work from them when they are allowed to work without their shoes so they can move their feet on the tile floor. Wobble chairs would add another layer to that freedom and bump up the quality of their learning. As adults, it is hard to sit for hours, as a ten year old, it is next to impossible A wobble chair will eliminate the constant thinking, self talk and compensating behaviors such as getting multiple drinks or trips to the bathroom just to give themselves a break from sitting. This will allow them to more freely concentrate on what is important and open the windows to many more "I wonder" moments. The more curious a student is, the more they want to learn.

I think that my students will benefit form these chairs tremendously.

They will be more focused and ask more thoughtful questions because they are now able to invest themselves totally. Our district is promoting perseverance, especially in writing. This is difficult for students. Wobble chairs will help improve that stamina needed to read and write for extended periods of time without giving up so easily. I have seen the results in other schools and it is amazing.
