My Students

Teaching in the extremely diverse and picturesque neighborhood in Brooklyn is a rewarding experience. My classroom is full of eager and excited learners from all over the world who teach me new things every day. These children love coming to school where they grow as readers, writers, mathematicians, and scientists. Our school offers some amazing music and art programs through which our students learn to express themselves in different ways. They take pride in their work and enjoy sharing it with each other and with their families. Many of our wonderful families join us in our classrooms to engage in our learning as often as possible.

The advantages to being part of such a unique and richly diverse school community also come with countless hardships that we strive to overcome together every day.

Many of our students are living in poverty and we have high populations of students with disabilities and English Language Learners. Even with a love for learning, many of our students are reading far below grade level, which often carries over to struggles in writing and math as well. I want to give my students every possible resource to help them reach their potential.

My Project

The students in my class have a wide range of learning styles. Some prefer to work on the carpet while others work more productively at their seats. In order to make sure that all of my students are able to maximize their learning, I need to provide them with ways to keep comfortable as they work in the spots they choose. Soft seating choices will make learning more comfortable and enjoyable for my students who like to work on the carpet as well those who prefer to sit in their seats.

Several of my learners have the wiggles and tend to fidget in ways that can be distracting to themselves and their classmates.

This becomes particularly challenging during independent reading time when most students are silently reading and I am working with small groups of students, leaving me unable to refocus my wigglers. Bouncy bands will allow them to move their feet as they work at their desks and the rocking seats offer a way to move around as they work on the carpet. These materials will help make our classroom a more comfortable, cozy, and productive learning environment for everyone.
