My Students

We are a 1st grade classroom of 21 students in Alaska. My students attend a diverse neighborhood school of about 260 students. We have no buses; everyone (myself included) lives within walking distance. This helps build a strong sense of community. It is a Title I school, with many students coming from low-income families. Every student can receive free breakfast and lunch.

I want my students to have the same opportunities and learning experiences as other children in an engaging, hands-on environment.

My 1st graders are thinkers. We shift our focus throughout our day, but they have many roles. I tell them from day 1 you are an artist, an author, an illustrator, a mathematician, a scientist, a friend. They come to school every day seeking a connection and wanting to learn. My students are special because they have a strong desire to do their best every day, even if they come from challenging circumstances.

My Project

A classroom's design and layout has a direct impact on student engagement and academic achievement. In a 2015 study done by the University of Salford, 153 classrooms were visited to investigate the impacts of enviromental factors on student learning. It was found that a whopping 73% of students' growth in math was attributed to classroom design and the opportunities to have flexiblity and student ownership.

I want my students to have the ability to choose where they can work in the classroom and take ownership of their learning.

Every child is unique, and the environment should be able to meet their individual needs. Some students may focus better while wiggling on a stool, sitting, or laying down. My hope is to boost students' productivity and allow them to focus on engaging in productive struggle during a lesson, rather than getting distracted as they struggle to work comfortably.

I am asking for Soft Seats, Wobble Chairs, Flex-Space Comfy Floor Seats, and an Indoor/Outdoor 3-in-1 Chair Set to give my students a variety of options to utilize throughout the day. These furniture pieces will also allow students to move safely while they work, rather than risking tipping over in a traditional chair. The durable nature of these products will allow for students to use the flexible seating options for years to come. I appreciate the opportunity to set all of my students up for success.
