This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I teach third grade at a Title I school in Colorado. The scholars in my classroom are hardworking, caring, and eager to learn. They come to school with a smile on their face every day, despite the trauma and hardships they may be experiencing at home. I would love to have a class set of bouncyband wiggle seat sensory cushions for each of my scholars.

Movement is essential for student learning.

However, the demands of curriculum do not allow for students to be moving throughout the day. There are times when it is expected that students are working at their desk space independently to show their abilities and growth throughout the year. Providing my scholars with bouncyband wiggle seat sensory cushions would allow for them to be more successful while working at their desk space. It would provide them with the ability to wiggle, or move, while still being able to complete their tasks at hand. Not only would these cushions be beneficial for children in my classroom who have or show signs of ADHD or autism, but they also help children that need to move constantly. Being able to move allows children to stay more alert and attentive to their learning. It also allows them to regulate their bodies more; thus, staying more focused throughout the day. Further, it engages their core muscles to improve core stability. All of which are largely beneficial for children.

My goal for this project is to provide each of my scholars with a bouncyband wiggle seat sensory cushion. I strongly believe that students who have access to flexible seating, that matches their needs, will be more successful in school. When children are able to incorporate movement into their learning, they are able to engage and grow more in the classroom.
