My Students

With the current emphasis on reading, writing, and math, students have less exposure to history and social studies. But learning about our past, brings the world a little bit closer to my middle school students.

My students have diverse backgrounds, but we all share the same history and live in the same world.

Many of my students come from poverty and their "world" is sometimes limited to their own backyard. Although they face many challenges each day, they come to school ready to learn and depend on me to create positive learning experiences.

My Project

Independent reading is a high priority in my classroom. Many of my students love a good adventure story, a fantasy, or a book in which they can see themselves. There is one genre that my students rarely read independently: nonfiction or informational text. According to experts in the education field, this is a genre which needs to be read more by all students.

What kids read is just as important as how much they read.

When students read nonfiction texts such as "Boys in the Boat" or "Turning 15 on the Road to Freedom" or "Navajo Code Talkers," they learn about the past and how it has formed their present and how it may influence their future. Reading nonfiction will help them to better understand their world.

Reading nonfiction at a young age also creates a solid foundation for future learning. As students move through middle and high school, nonfiction reading increases to almost 75% of their total reading requirement. With these nonfiction books I am requesting, my students will have the opportunity to be exposed to complex texts which will help them to become critical thinkers.

I know nonfiction opens students' minds to the world of wonder and curiosity and helps them to become better learners. So why nonfiction? I simply answer, Why not!
