Why Do You Say, 'Alsooo? Ya Know. Cool! Alsooo?'

My classroom would really benefit from having a 160GB iPod classic, FM/transmitter charger, and speaker system in order to assist my students in acquiring English as their second language.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach English as a Second Language to migrant and immigrant children, as well as children born here in the US to non-native speakers of English. I teach 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th grade on a daily basis, and have an after-school tutoring allotment for K-6th. Our community is high need (100% free and reduced lunch), inner-city, and within a school district that was ranked 2nd in the nation for highest drop-out rate by a survey headed by Collin Powell of the 2003-2004 school year. (This is the most recent survey released.) Our school has one year left to raise the standardized test scores, ISTEP, or the entire school will be disbanded. Since our migrant and immigrant population is so high, they are a major source of our low, non-passing percentage.

My students, as migrant and immigrant children, struggle in all realms of academics due to their lack of language skills. Also, as you may have surmised, they struggle with motivation for school in general, especially motivation towards graduation.

I plan to increase my students' overall test scores, motivation and interest in reading in general, and to generate a passion for learning through the gift of music. Music has been proven to increase memory and has a demonstratedly strong affect on the overall motivation of students to learn in general. I plan to 'sneak' language learning into lessons addressing new vocabulary, pronunciation, phrasing, intonation, and normal speech pacing through this motivating tool. I believe that especially contemporary music is motivating to the children because it is familiar. I hope to make real-world connections between the lyrics and the content of our lessons, connecting songs to history, novels, creative writing, and even the sciences! Additionally, I hope to address an additional challenge my students face daily aside from those of their peers, cultural immersion. This component, I believe, is an important aspect of ESL classrooms, and is not included in the regular classroom curriculum. I believe that the lyrics and emotional pull of music will assist me in addressing the obstacles of integrating oneself into a new culture.

Just a few weeks ago I had this question from one of my students: "Why do you say, 'Also?' Ya know, like when the kids say, 'Cool! Alsooo!'" These types of incorrect guesses at our difficult and heavily idiomatic language are quite typical of my ESL students. Music will allow us to learn slang, contractions, and other typical American speech phrases like, "Cool! Awesome!" Slowly, confidently, and together through the motivation of music, YOU can help them to acquire their English, pass the test, and save our ever-so-loved community school. Maybe YOU can even be a part of making The American Dream possible to our students and their families- to earn a FREE and EQUAL education.
