My Project

At WHS, we have a lot of newcomers coming from different countries. It is a new experience for them to live in a new country. However, many of them feel homesick and have a hard time finding their sense of belonging in Hawaii. Moreover, because of this, many newcomers refuse to ask for teachers' help when they need it. To help our newcomers find a sense of belonging and promote their social-emotional learning, I am creating this after-school project that allows students to express their cultures and arts through handcrafting. At the same time, this project also allows students to learn different handcrafting styles in Hawaii.

With the paracord bracelet kits, candle kits, jewelry kits, and other candle and jewelry materials, our students will have the materials to make their own candles and jewelry art crafts by incorporating their cultures together.

You are not only helping students to feel comfortable at school, you will ultimately help students to improve their self-esteem and see themselves as contributors to our community.

Students will be able to share their cultures by creating different handcrafts with their classmates and themselves. It also encourages students to come after school to seek help as they need to and build a strong relationship with teachers.
