My Students

My students come from all neighborhoods of our city, and their backgrounds range a great deal with regard to race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and life experience.

Our school encourages students to become advocates in their own learning, and they are given a great deal of choice in the direction of their studies.

They are taught to imagine, innovate, inquire, and investigate. When our students graduate, they are prepared to attend college and the world beyond, equipped with 21st-century critical thinking skills and technological savvy.

My Project

Exposing my students to a diversity of voices through the books I assign them to read has always been important to me. With each new school year, I look for fresh works of literature that might unlock something in their hearts and minds and achieve, simultaneously, two things: a fostering of a love of literature and a building of empathy for people who experience institutionalized oppression. Sometimes the students themselves have these stories and experiences, sometimes not. All students, I believe, profit from reading about them.

I want to help all of my students see that stories of oppression matter; I want them to understand that the story of inequality is the story of America.

I want them to know that until we confront this difficult truth, it will be impossible to move beyond it. Yaa Gyasi's Homegoing would greatly enhance the curriculum I've already established, opening as it does with the story of slavery from the very beginnings of the slave trade off of the Gold Coast of Africa and ending with a glimpse of what it is like to be black in America in the twenty-first century.

In order to understand that racism is systemic, that we all participate in it on a daily basis, and that turning a blind eye will only perpetuate the status quo, my students really need to read this novel.
