My Project

Each year my students learn about various biomes. We explore the living and nonliving parts of the ecosystems. This unit is always a kid favorite, but something is missing. My students are interested in learning about predators and prey. They would better retain this information if they were actively involved in the process.

Owl pellet dissection helps give wing to scientific discovery.

When dissecting pellets students are able to classify and sort animal remains within the specimen. Students gain a better understanding of an owl's anatomy as well as the anatomy of their prey. Students might even gain a desire to enter the scientific fields later in life from experiences such as this. Creating more nature friendly citizens and growing awareness of caring for ecosystems is always a goal within our classroom walls.
