Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My classroom is full of vibrant, bright, and energetic youth. They live in a high-need community with about 94% of them living in poverty, and yet they shine in their academic abilities. Despite the everyday challenges they encounter, from hunger to violence, 93% of my students met or exceeded state standards and I expect that at least 50% of my 8th grade students will be able to attend selective high schools.

Although it is mandated by our state to teach about the Holocaust, our school does not have the library, resources, and materials necessary to teach the subject in a way that will engage our students. Our history books are from the 1980's and the subject of the Holocaust is not included in these books. I would love to give my students the opportunity to use quality materials as they learn how to research and when reading in literature circles; better preparing them for high school expectations and standards.

I have requested resources for a diverse library of fiction and nonfiction books in order to engage all students. Throughout this new school year I am using the theme, "Who's In, Who's Out?" as we look at issues of belonging, community, culture, and justice. The topics that will be addressed include the Holocaust, the Civil Rights Movement, Immigration, and other issues of youth identity. I have materials for most of these topics but lack materials on the Holocaust. I also included books that address current day issues of belonging, violence, identity, and community for today's youth.

Last year my students told me that our studies 'changed their lives' and that they hope to seek careers they had never dreamed of in the past. I know that your contribution to these young and promising youth will again change their lives and take them down paths never before imagined.
