My Students

My students go to school in Southeast Michigan just outside of Detroit. I am blessed with a very kind group of 5th graders and this year, we have built a welcoming, yet risk-taking community.

My students are inquisitive, self-motivated, and ready to learn.

81% of the students in our building are English Language Learners, many of them in the country for less than one year. More than 90% of my students are economically disadvantaged and qualify for free or reduced price lunch.

My students are learning to love math and science! These subjects are difficult for many of them because they lack the academic language needed. However, through hands-on activities, we are bringing new life to these subjects.

My Project

I am requesting an owl pellet kit as well as gloves for my 5th grade students. The students in my 5th grade class study the food chain as part of the science curriculum. With the materials that I am requesting, students will be able to have a hands on experience to understand the concept of food chains. Students will be able to manipulate the materials and work collaboratively to identify the remains contained in the owl pellets. I think this would be a fun, interactive way to bring the food chain to life!

The owl pellet kit and gloves will help to provide my students with the resources my 5th grade students need to truly understand food chains & ecosystems.
