My Students

"You teach Kindergarten? Aren't they wiggly?" You bet they are, but this is only a problem during instructional times such as reading, calendar, and morning meeting. Young children are still developing their sense of spacial orientation and have a hard time finding an appropriate space.

In my public school we are lucky enough to have a wide range of learning styles, religions, races, languages, and family structures.

Some educators would find these characteristics to be challenge, but I find they bring substance, reality, and diversity to our education. Something else others might consider a challenge for teaching is having 20 five and six year olds all day long. Yes they are wiggly, fidgety, and developmentally programed with a short attention span; I wouldn't have it any other way. We get to sing and dance and move all day long which helps me stay active, too! However, there are times where I need to engage them in meaningful learning experiences that require attention, ability to sit in a circle or facing the board, and the safety of a routine.

My Project

Imagine the last time you went to a conference or a meeting or a class. How did you feel about where to sit? Was it clearly labeled or communicated to you? Children thrive on routine and consistency because this lays the groundwork for them to be able to take risks in their learning and social skills. If a child knows where they are going to sit, their nerves subside, and they are able to focus more on the learning at hand. This amazingly organized and brightly colored carpet would do wonders for these fidgety five year olds! Starting off our day with morning meeting, which is always in a circle, is our first challenge. Asking a group of 20 Kindergarteners to form a circle usually entails confusion, arm tugging, and tattling, and that is no way to set the mood for the day! This carpet would help hone their spacial orientation skills by providing a border to sit around for a circle, as well as an individual square when it is time to face the board.

This project may seem trivial compared to other requests out there such as books and cameras, however I find that the learning can not take place unless the climate and community are set in place first.

Although this carpet is both beautiful and academically stimulating, it is not something my county can vouch for spending money on during times of extreme budget cuts. Help me set the tone of a safe, engaging, and organized classroom for these children so that the focus can be on the learning!
