My Project

One of the great delights of teaching for me is creating new learning experiences for my students. This year I have to opportunity to create an entirely new elective course at my school--the History of Mystery, a genre studies class focused on the creation and development of detection in literature. I have selected many stories for us to study that are in the public domain, but with a little help I can show my students so much more of the world of mystery.

I first fell in love with murder mysteries when I read "And Then There Were None" in 9th grade, and I am so excited to pass that love to my students.

My school is Title 1, so many of our kids come from low income and low literacy backgrounds. It is my hope that in learning about such a high interest genre and having access to a range of books both classic and modern with diverse characters will get my students excited about reading. Multitudes of studies have shown that reading alone is linked to development in all areas of literacy--vocabulary development, oral expression, writing, and more. I want my students to learn to love reading as I did when I read Agatha Christie, so that they can find joy in it and continue to grow as readers and learners long after our class is finished.
