Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students attend a Title One school in South Carolina. My class is made up of eighteen fourth grade boys. One hundred percent of my students receive free breakfast and lunch. Most of our students' families also lack the resources to provide books and other educational supplies for their children to use at home. Despite their economic disadvantages, my students come to school eager to learn!
More than half of my students are currently reading below grade level.
With more time for sustained silent reading in our schedule this year, and new books recently received for our classroom library, I am hoping a new and inviting place to read will help my boys foster a love for reading. The more they read, the better readers they will become.
My Project
My students are in need of fun, entertaining and attention-grabbing science read alouds and independent reading books.
All of these humorous and wonderful books will grab the students'' attention and help to make math fun and enjoyable, even for the most reluctant scientists in hiding.
Students are much more receptive to math lessons when they can truly see how science will benefit them in their real lives. These whimsical read alouds will allow students to see themselves on each of the pages, solving problems along with the main characters.
These fantastic read alouds will serve as wonderful openers to our science lessons and units.
