My Project

My middle school environmental studies students are passionate advocates for themselves and the environment. When they learned about declining biodiversity levels world-wide, my students became curious about the biodiversity in our community. As a result, we are currently auditing our campus to determine how many species live in our urban ecosystem. So far we have identified and counted the plants on campus, but the animals have proved trickier!

This motion detecting wildlife camera will allow us to monitor the campus at nights and on weekends so we can find out which animals call our school home.

I plan to set up the camera on Fridays after school and remove it on Monday mornings. The solar panels will keep the camera charged and the large-capacity SD card will allow us to capture images throughout the weekend.

During class on Mondays, we will review the images captured by the camera and add those animals to our biodiversity roster. Once we understand the types of animals that visit our school, students will be able to develop a plan to ensure that our campus continues to provide the resources they need to survive. We will also be able to identify strategies to increase the numbers of organisms in our campus ecosystem.
