I work in a Title I school in California and 100% of my students are a part of the free and reduced lunch program. I teach sheltered English for seniors.
My students are English language learners who have had several years of ESL classes, but have never taken an English literature class before.
They are mostly Spanish speaking from Central America, though I have a few students from Afghanistan, India, the Philippines, and Vietnam. Many of my students are hardworking, and highly motivated to learn English. This year they aspire to graduate from high school and move on to university or community college.
My Project
The tragic play Oedipus the King is a great literary text for English learners. The play format requires that students practice speaking and gives them the opportunity to dramatize and practice pronunciation in the process. The essential questions of this text are enduring, applicable to other texts, and very accessible to teens. Finally, this particular translation is clear and eloquent, but the language is also within the reach of English language learners.
I have taught this book to sheltered English learners before, and it was both fun and academically challenging to the students.
I think it pairs very nicely with Hamlet, a core work for seniors in my district. However, my new school does not have a class set available so I am reaching out to Donors Choose. Thanks very much for considering my project!
