My Students

My students need the opportunity to pretend to read and retell stories. Giving my students props such as puppets allows them to be the character such as the Big Bad Wolf or The Old Lady that Swallowed the Fly. Imaginations help bring books to life so my students can fall in love with books.

My students are ages three through fives.

The children in my classroom are very active but love to read and pretend to be the characters in the story. When they have the opportunity and materials to retell stories with puppets, felt board pieces, or costumes they feel as if they are actually the characters in the story. After hearing the story The Three Billy Goats Gruff, the children went on the playground and re enacted the story under the bridge to the playground of their favorite things are the hand puppets of Goldilocks and the Three Little Pigs. My students love to bring stories to life with hands on materials that help them remember how the story goes.

My Project

After reading the stories to the students they pretend to be the characters, change the tone in their voice and become a character in the story. The magic that occurs when books come to life and let the children remember the emotions of the characters, the repetition of the story line, and how to predict what will happen next. The abilities that the students have is amazing. The children put together story time and they all sit and watch the show on the stage they have made out of crates. Each child waits their turn to pick a character and retell the story to the other children. Having an opportunity to hear the story in large groups, listening centers, and free choice time sets up the students engage in something they love-books. There are many different learning moments in activities such as these. The students learn how to handle books, how to track the text as they listen to the Cd's, how to engage socially with one another, and how an author writes a book form beginning to end.

This project will improve my classroom because it will give my students the materials to engage in familiar stories with props that will help them remember the story line.

They will be able to pick up a book and retell the story using various different voices and gestures that match the characters. This type of play may help shy or reserved students feel comfortable engaging with other children and it could also spark an interest in drama activities later in their lifetime.
