My Students

Students who are not motivated will not learn. I truly believe that we cannot teach today's students with yesterday's methods. If we want our students to master content, it must be presented in a way that addresses their learning styles.

I teach at a large Title I school.

Our diversity makes us a special school, but the obstacles our students face sometimes get the best of them. It is hard for them to find motivation and inspiration. Our students are made up of an incredibly diverse population. Many are on free/reduced lunch, many come from military families, and many struggle with external issues that sometimes get in the way of school work. However, they are incredibly talented young people. They have shown repeatedly that they have great academic potential and ability. They simply lack the focus and extra motivation to perform to the best of their ability.

My Project

I am requesting a lab kit that will supply the materials to conduct 26 different genetics' labs. Heredity and genetics is a concept that my students find difficult and frustrating. However, this is an important unit as it directly relates to their lives. This could be an incredibly relevant and exciting unit if I had the resources to allow for it. This kit would bring heredity to my students in a real way and make it come alive for them. Once interested in the material, they would not only master the concept, but truly understand the relevance of this unit. They would have a reason to look forward to science class!
