My Students

Motivating students with learning disabilities to write and solve problems can be challenging, especially when students have felt "behind" throughout their lives. I have found that they DO love to share their knowledge by helping me at the front of the room, using the big dry-erase board.

My students are 5th and 6th graders striving to get up to grade level in a special education resource room for reading and math.

Most of them have transferred schools several times before finding us, in the hopes that their specific needs could be met THIS time. We are so happy to have them with us. Despite the obstacles they face every day, we are excited because we can see their potential. Over 90% of our students are on the free/reduced lunch plan and to many students, our school is their safe haven.

My Project

Sometimes, getting students motivated about learning can be challenging. All of their life they've been told they are behind and have a lot of work to do. They become easily frustrated with new material. However, both their general education teachers and I have discovered their love for writing on the dry-erase boards. For some reason, writing "like the teacher does" with a fancy pen, on a shiny surface gets them excited about learning a new spelling word or rounding a number to the nearest hundreds place! They also love to play games- they are competitive! There are a multitude of games we can play in both reading and math to enhance their learning and make it more fun for them!

Students in my classroom face countless hurdles every day.

Hurdles that as a child, I never had to THINK about- forget jumping! Hurdles like poverty, behavior problems, tragic family deaths, bullying, and feeling separated from the "other kids". Finding differentiated instruction materials and peaking their interest has been a struggle. There are many things about my students that I still need to learn, but one thing I know they DO like and can learn with are dry-erase boards.
