My Students

This year I will have a variety of first grade students, each with their own unique energy.

They will arrive at school, awaiting new experiences, coming from many different backgrounds.

Our school is part of the largest school district in Washington state. We are an ESTEM school, but lack the funding for materials to help students grow as learners.

Our community of learners are inquisitive problem solvers. They love hands-on materials, and ways to share their knowledge with others.

My Project

The use of whiteboards is a daily activity in my classroom. Unfortunately, the flimsier whiteboards provided have been loved to death. Double sided magnetic whiteboards would provide a more sustainable, easier to use alternative for my students.

In math, students show their critical thinking and problem solving strategies.

The whiteboards allow me to see exactly what they are thinking, as well as provide an easy place for them to show and share their work. Students are also able to have more student voice, and learn from, and build upon the strategies of others.

In literacy, first graders are still forming handwriting habits that will help them to increase their writing fluency. The lined side of the whiteboards will help immensely with this practice.

Having durable, easy to clean whiteboards would make the lives of my students just a little bit easier.
