Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach high school students in an urban setting, less than 2 miles from Downtown Los Angeles. My students are primarily first and second generation immigrants who have an impressive drive to succeed. I teach in a school where they are encouraged to attend college, and as such, teaching students new media literacy is just as important as teaching content and study skills. For many of my students, they will be the first in their family to graduate high school. Over 98% of our student population are part of the free and reduced lunch program.

My students are strong-willed, persevering and have a desire to succeed, but unfortunately, due to their family's socioeconomic status, do not have the same access to materials as most high schoolers.

That is primarily why we focus on teaching 21st-Century skills at school, and why funding this project is imperative for their success.

My Project

My students understand the importance of collaboration in learning because they practice it daily. Students often complete research on a topic, become an "expert" on the subject, and then teach it to the other students in class. This lesson structure builds their content knowledge, since research tells us that the best way to advance your learning is to teach something to someone else, build students' confidence with public speaking, and gives students practice in the valuable skill of building student-run study groups, which are essential in college.

I love being able to empower students to be the experts on a topic, and they love being able to present that topic to the class.

With these whiteboards and easels, students will be able to create a presentation in Government, Economics and AP Psychology class and the students can walk to each presenter in a "gallery walk" type lesson. Students will gain valuable communications skills that will help them succeed in college or in almost any career they chose.
