White Teachers Teaching Students of Color

I need books and resources for my fellow teachers and I to have a book club to help us learn more about our students of color and how to best serve our diverse population.

My Students

I work with the lowest readers at the school and with students who are in a special unit for extra academic and behavioral support. My goal is to give every student the best, targeted interventions for them. One of the research-backed ways I have found to support my various types of learners is through the use of an on-site Facility Dog.

Having a trained, licensed Facility Dog has already had a profound impact on my many struggling students, and I would like to be able to provide them full access to such a resource.

There have been some truly amazing moments with my students and our practice Facility Dog, and I would like to make this a more permanent fixture at our school.

My Project

Many of us white teachers would like to better understand our students of color, especially working at a school with a very diverse population.

These resources will help us facilitate a book club to expand our thinking and examine our own biases.

I believe these resources will help us really learn to teach our students better, and I think it will be good for our mental health as teachers to work in a collaborative learning space.

The pandemic has really made it hard for all of us to connect, so these materials are an attempt at building connection with each other and our students.
