My Project

My students are a diverse group of first through third graders in a Montessori classroom. We seldom use worksheets or workbooks in our class as we seek to reduce waste. The use of whiteboards is almost a daily activity in my classroom, especially with math facts and sight words practice. During math lessons, students come to the rug with whiteboards for guided practice and to record modeled strategies. The whiteboards allow me to see exactly what they are doing, as well as provide an easy place for them to show and share their work. What becomes a problem is that the markers never seem to last, erasers seem to disappear, and the whiteboards slowly become stained from frequent use. When this happens, students must leave the rug to get a new marker, new eraser, or the last choice, pencil and paper. It is a distraction for many of my students who struggle with focusing and they miss important instruction form either myself or other students. The copy paper and laminate will be used by the students to create booklets and posters on which they can record the language assignments they complete with our manipulatives on the floor. By giving them options other than simply recording their work in their journals, making the booklets and posters sparks their interests and imagination.

Students will be able to simply focus on the academic material at hand, and not whether their materials are going work properly.
