I am a first-year 10th grade geometry teacher at an inner-city high school in Maryland. My students are bright, and truly want to learn, however, low expectations and scarce resources have hurt their education. I have high expectations for my students; I need your help to give them the resources they deserve.

Geometry is a very visual, and often abstract subject. Students need to see colored diagrams to understand the difficult concepts that are presented (special right triangles, the Pythagorean theorem -- it's not easy!). Color coding helps students understand the difficult material, and can be especially helpful to special education students.

Students LOVE writing on white boards. I don’t know what it is, but they beg to write on the very small white board that I currently have. If we had a white board in the class, students would be eager to share their math work. Now, students are reluctant and slow to get up to share their answers. But, with a white board, students would be excited to get up and draw. Finally, many of my students have trouble seeing the board. Many students need eye glasses but do not own them, or if they do wear glasses, they are broken or the wrong prescription. By the end of the day, my blackboard is dusty and difficult to read. I don’t have time to wash it thoroughly after every class. Colored chalk is impossible to use because it doesn't erase well and streaks are left on the board. White boards are much easier to read, and are visible from first period to last period. My students with poor vision will have a much easier time seeing the bright, colorful writing on a whiteboard.

By funding this proposal, you will make it possible for my students to really "see" the geometry. They'll be able to understand the concepts better, and students who literally have trouble seeing the board will be able to see the diagrams they need to understand the math. Please give my students a chance to see the math
