My Students

As a teacher in a low-income/high-poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences. When they come into my theatre classroom it becomes a world that has no restrictions on them. They are allowed to be themselves and understand that they will be loved here regardless of who they are.

They show me every day that what makes an effective teacher is someone who personally invests in their students.

These kids are hungry for someone to care about them and to help them see their self-worth. That is why I am in this profession. These kids need heroes, and sometimes just sometimes instead of capes, they have chalk-stained hands.

My Project

As a theatre class, we build everything we use in our plays. Whether it is designing lights, finding sound effects, or building the set, we create it ourselves. The one thing we have yet to be able to create is costumes! We are blessed with a large stock of costume pieces, but alas, they sometimes do not meet our needs depending on the type of show we are performing. A majority of them are very modern with a few pieces being specific for certain eras.

There is where these new sewing machines come into play!

With these machines, my students would be able to create original costumes for any era, whether it be the primitive caveman days or the modern fashion catwalk. My students have such amazingly creative individuals, and I want to give them every opportunity to display that. Providing them with a sewing lab will do that. As their skills with the new machines grow, so will our ability to create more elaborate costumes. They will also be able to study fashion and designs from other eras and have the opportunity to recreate them.

By helping provide these devices, you are not only encouraging a drama program, but you are also helping to inspire possibly the new great fashion designer! This will give my students real hands-on learning that will carry over into their lives beyond high school as well. Being able to sew a hem or stitch a tear is somewhat of a lost art with this generation, and you can be a part of helping to keep that skill alive and well here at our school. The sky is the limit with this project. I thank you so much for constantly supporting us and for helping to provide the very best for my students!
