My Students

Results show that students read more fiction stories because they are fun, but non-fiction helps to build a student's vocabulary. Non-fiction stories can help the students relate to the real world and see what is happening around them and all around the world.

My students are first grade EIP.

They are sweet students that are willing to learn but have some trouble reading. I want to be able to help them gain the vocabulary to become better readers. The purpose of EIP (Early Intervention Program) is to provide additional instructional resources to help students who are performing below grade level in math and reading obtain the necessary academic skills to reach grade level performance in the shortest possible time.

My Project

Time for Kids (or TFK) is a division magazine of Time magazine that is produced especially for children. It contains some national news, a "Cartoon of the Week," and other features in its weekly eight pages. This magazine is great to use in guided reading along with the whisper phones. The whisper phones are also used when I send my kids off to finish reading their "book" or during silent reading EACH day. I have some kids who REALLY need to work on fluency or some kids that just CAN NOT read in their heads. Giving them the whisper phone can really help them to hear how they sound when they read, and that they don't need to read too loud.

Not only does non-fiction reading improve reading skills, but it also helps students to understand the world around them.

Time for Kids makes reading entertaining and interesting for students of all ages.
