This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The EMPOWER Program is designed to support high school students who internalize emotions, helping them build academic, social-emotional, and executive functioning skills. Many of my students face school resistance due to personal challenges, and one of our key goals is to create positive, engaging experiences that encourage a stronger connection to school. These students are incredibly resilient, working toward their high school diplomas while preparing for life beyond graduation.

Cooking is a vital life skill that not only fosters independence but also opens doors to career opportunities.

I am requesting basic kitchen tools—such as rolling pins, cutlery, kitchen knives, mixing bowls, pots and pans, oven mitts, and other essentials—to teach my students healthy, affordable cooking techniques and to educate them about the Farm-to-School process. This hands-on learning will help them practice executive functioning skills such as planning, organization, and time management, while also introducing them to skills that can be applied in careers related to the culinary arts and hospitality industries.

The goal of this project is to equip my students with practical, real-world skills that boost their confidence and prepare them for independent living. By learning to cook, they will gain valuable experience that can transfer to future career paths, while also developing a more positive relationship with school as a place of growth and opportunity.
