Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The idea of flexible seating is not anything new. Learners of all ages, including adults, are finding that the old standby of hard chairs and standard sized desks for an extended period of time, is not the best way to achieve maximum engagement and the success from which that comes. Fifth graders, especially, are growing physically and emotionally. What better way to create an environment with the ability to meet the many different learning styles of a student (sometimes changing on a daily basis) than offering multiple sensory friendly, non restrictive, comfortable classroom seating options?

Picture this: a classroom full of students working on an assignment or project from a learning space they have designated as best suited for their working style.

While traditional seating will still be a part of my classroom and used as a home base for each student's materials, there will be several different types of choices available to them that inspire learning through comfort, and that meets the many different sensory needs of the modern student. If you've ever watched students desperately trying to make themselves comfortable while listening to a lesson or story, or felt helpless as a movement-seeking learner attempted to focus while struggling with the solid metal traditional chair, you understand the inspiration behind this project.

Included in my chosen items are soft, cushioned chairs and pillows in calming colors, lap desks that can be easily transported to different areas of the classroom, standing work options, (a huge favorite for those with disabilities or who need to stretch and unfold their growing bodies) and a low table that allows for working on assignments, including with technology. I mention often that before a student can learn, they must first feel comfortable in the classroom environment and that is the goal of my project.
