My students need social studies materials that help them learn to read maps.
FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Noon's classroom raised $177

My Students
Our classroom is part of a large building dedicated to serving students with severe disabilities from ages 5 to 21. This year, our group consists of 6 non-verbal or minimally verbal teenagers who are academically functioning around a first grade level. All students use an iPad as a communication device.
I believe in exposing my students to as many topics and ideas as possible, regardless of disability or academic level.
Presenting new subjects in an enjoyable, intriguing way leads to student interest. Their interest keeps them engaged and their engagement results in learning.
"Kids have to be exposed to different things in order to develop. A child's not going to find out he likes to play a musical instrument if you never exposed him to it..."
~Dr. Temple Grandin
My Project
Social studies is a challenging topic to teach in a classroom of students with special needs. I believe one of the most important units to explore is geography, more specifically, map skills. My students benefit from knowing where they are in the world and how to navigate their community. Visual aids and hands-on activities make the topic more realistic and clear. Learning about landforms will make students more aware of their surroundings when they are traveling somewhere new. Social studies lessons like these also give students opportunities to strengthen their reading and writing, and to communicate more with their peers.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
