My students need to see 27 examples of women writers who are creating fiction that is captivating and relevant to their lives. I encourage the young women in my class to be leaders, and I am confident that they can help me make reading cool.

Whether they realize it or not, the young women in my class are the greatest resource I have. They are the source of "what's cool" and "what's important" in my 8th grade language arts class. It is only with their help that I can create the kind of atmosphere we need in our school.
We struggle against a culture that doesn't value reading and we work to capture the attention of a generation that, frankly, are very different than the kids I grew up with. Fortunately, there is a generation of amazing female writers like Stephenie Meyers and Sarah Dessen that have had amazing success capturing the imagination of teenagers.
With the young women in my classes reading these fantastically addictive books, they will set a tone on our team. If the girls carry books, and talk about books, the boys are sure to follow. It's an age-old phenomenon and one that I am not afraid to exploit! With the fall of the first domino, it is my hope that reading will sweep even faster across my team.
To be a great reader is to have a bright future. I have no doubt that the equation is really that simple. With your gift, you will provide the kind of materials that will help build great readers. These books, that kids can't put down, are the help I need to get involved in building great people.
